about

good bones is a clubhouse for creatives
& mischief makers in fort collins, colorado

good bones is the title of a lovely poem by maggie smith. it captures the work of the artist perfectly: to make this shithole beautiful.

good bones is a studio collective that centers mutual aid, play, & creative co-regulation.

we are not a gallery or for-profit corporate ‘Art Business.’

we’re an anti-capitalist clubhouse, doing things grassroots & diy style- a little punk rock.

we are sewists, botanical dyers, leathercrafters, painters, weavers, tinkerers, builders, collectors, printmakers, gardeners, bookbinders, flower pressers, upcyclers, teachers, crafters, witches, makers, co-conspirators, truth tellers, dismantlers.

good bones is welcoming to all sorts of creatives at all levels: no artistic gatekeeping here!

the space

our private makerspace has a cozy lounge, classroom/dance floor for hosting workshops, kitchen with coffee and tea station, library, dye & print lab, sewing studio, outdoor class & work space, lots of communal art supplies & tools, & personal studio spaces. we also have a little retail honor shop in which to sell our work!

we’re located off s college, south of harmony.

a studio membership includes use of all communal spaces & equipment, plus a personal studio space. a cubby membership offers the same amenities as a studio membership, but with a personal storage cubby. the studio spaces range in cost due to size differences ($140-$340) and a cubby membership is $70-100 per month.

we use a sliding scale pricing model for most things, and encourage our members to use one too. the lower end of the sliding scale is for younger folks on their own, folks with marginalized identities, hourly workers, folks with debt, solo parents, etc.

the higher end of the sliding scale is for homeowners, salary workers, folks with privileged identities, folks with generational wealth, folks with other income streams, folks who can take multiple trips a year, etc.

no explanation needed; place yourself as you see fit.

we also have a guest policy with a drop-in rate, so members can bring co-conspirators to good bones and cowork.

members are also invited to display their work in the halls & honor store. good bones does not take any commission from member sales.

our club also hosts regular monthly potlucks and meetups. we get together to share our work, commiserate, and laugh a lot.

all visits are by invite-only;
we are not open to the public.

anyone interested in joining the club should note:

good bones is a substance-free space.

good bones members engage in Covid harm reduction practices, including vaccinations & masking policies, when implemented.

no glitter. you know why.

we don’t have the facilities to support ceramics work or hot metal processes. maybe someday!

good bones centers the liberation of all people. especially Palestinians, Black folks, women & femmes, people of color, Indigenous folks, disabled folks, queer folks, trans folks, people of all faiths, & marginalized people everywhere.

we work to leverage our privileges in real time & stay in the messy discomfort of repair. we commit to the awareness of cultural appropriation & representation in our work & technique.

good bones sprang from the mind of ringleader niki hale, a mama & maker known for making shit happen. she realized that her work is more prolific & satisfying when made in community.

niki’s a sewist, tinkerer, clown, soup alchemist, costumer, gardener, & dancer. she’s got tattoos & loves fuck words. in her past lives, she was a kindergarten teacher, EMT, camp counselor, lifeguard & swim instructor, & trauma-sensitive massage therapist. she’s also facilitated many many circles, retreats, & community containers.

she lives a mile away from good bones with her husband, toddler, & furry overlords.

she did not go to art school.
